LETTERS FROM JONI LAMB – JULY 2020

What makes a great song? For me, its powerful lyrics and the anointing they carry with them. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved getting lost in the presence of the Lord through a great worship song, and one psalmist’s words in particular always touched my heart. Her name was Fanny Crosby.

Though she was blind, she had such vision for the things of God, and it poured out of her pen into the words of some of the most beloved hymns of the last 100 years. To this day, churches all over the world sing “Blessed Assurance,” “To God Be the Glory,” and “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior” on any given Sunday. She just had a way of capturing the majesty and beauty of walking with the Lord. Always transparent and tender, her words continue to inspire and lead congregations into that secret place at the foot of God’s throne.

Having been ministered to through her music for almost my entire life, it was such an honor to have the opportunity to help put music to some of her previously unreleased lyrics. So, with the help of my son-in-love Joshua Brown, we set out to share these unknown gems with a new generation of listeners. To bring these songs to life, I enlisted a few of my friends, like Fred Hammond, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Russ Taff, Nicole C. Mullen and more.

This month on Joni Table Talk we’re bringing you a special two-part look at Fanny Crosby, the influence she’s had on each of us, and performances of these new songs.
